Barbara Egenes

Barbara L. Egenes, age 87, passed on December 27, 2019, in the home of her daughter, Judith and son-in-law, Dr. Gary Kavit of Yorktown, VA., surrounded by her family.

Barbara was born in Brooklyn, NY, and a 40-year resident of Lynbrook, NY, and 15-year resident of Kent, CT. She was a former parishioner of Our Lady of Peace Church in Lynbrook, NY and Sacred Heart Church, Kent, CT.

Barbara’s education and career achievements were many. She was a proud alumna of New York University Steinhardt, Master of Art Therapy, Adelphi University, Garden City, NY – BSN cum laude; and Nassau Community College also in Garden City, NY. Barbara worked as a Psychiatric Registered Nurse at Hempstead General Hospital, and an Art Therapist/Consultant for the NYC Board of Education PS 4K in Brooklyn, NY and at the Guild for Exceptional Children Early Childhood Education Program, also in Brooklyn. While living in Kent, CT, Barbara worked as a Art Consultant at the Kent Children’s Center and as a substitute Educational Para-professional/Substitute Art Teacher in the Region One School District, Falls Village, CT.

Barbara, an extremely talented artist, enjoyed sharing her passion for art especially with children. She had several articles published in Arts & Activities Magazine, describing & illustrating her developmental art lesson plans. She was an avid art gallery explorer and also volunteered, for several years, in the MoMA Family Art Workshop program in NYC.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Cecilia Lever, sister Joan Barberi, husband Stanley Egenes daughter Linda Borst, and son-in-law John Quirk. She is survived by her sister: Patricia Cirillo; children: Karen Egenes-Quirk, John Egenes (Mary) and Judith Kavit (Gary); her grand-children: Ryan Quirk (Erin), Griffin Quirk (Anne), Sarah Nadeau (Nick), Matthew Borst (Debbe Long), Elizabeth Houck (Seth), Zachary Borst (Megan), Caroline Kavit (Sunny Cheng), Benjamin Kavit (Soley Esteves), Patrick Egenes, Samuel Egenes; her great-grandchildren: Riley, Wrenn & Kennedy Nadeau; Emily Borst; Isabelle, Levi & Hazel Houck; Callan Borst; John & Jūn Quirk, Kieran & Odin Quirk. Also survived by Alan Borst, Joanna Borst, many nieces, nephews and friends.
