Deacon Aniello Squitieri Jr.
Ordained May 21, 1994
Deacon Niel was born on August 27, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. On February 15,1953, he married his lovely wife Maria (Tomasso) and raised 3 wonderful children JoAnn (1956), Neil (1957) and Mark (1969.)
In 1951, he began his career in furniture crafting. In order to spend more time with his family, he decided to hang up his tool belt and become a Corrections Officer in Brooklyn. Unable to be complacent in his retirement from Corrections, he dusted off his tool belt and reentered the world of Carpentry. Very quickly he became a popular Carpenter in the community. In 1989 when he retired from Carpentry, he began his studies as a Deacon. When asked by the Church why he wanted to become a Deacon at this point in his life he replied “My children are grown and healthy and I want to thank God for all he’s given me.” He was ordained on May 21, 1994 and became a much loved Deacon at Our Lady of Peace in Lynbrook until he finally retired in 2015.
Anyone who knew Deacon Niel would tell you what a wonderful person he was. Always quick with a blessing and a joke, he captured the hearts of so many. He died peacefully on July 9th surrounded by his family and friends. He will be truly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
