Carol Ann Burak was born in Manhattan on October 12, 1941 to parents Guiseppe and Nellie Garamone. She was the youngest of five children (who have predeceased Carol). Once Carol had her own children, the entire extended family moved to Long Island and chose Lynbrook for that home. Carol was a resident in the Lynbrook community for over 50 years. She devoted her life to the church and its ministries. She worked as the parish secretary for Our Lady of Peace for many years and eventually was employed by the Diocese of Rockville Centre working for the nursing sisters.
Carol volunteered her talents to her parish and community her entire adult life. She was an extraordinary minister at Our Lady of Peace for 40 years. She volunteered as a religious education teacher for 25 years. In 1977, she started the OLP Thrift Shop which was originally intended to be an ongoing fundraiser for the parish and now, during hard times, it serves to provide those in need with clothing and home goods which they could not otherwise purchase. She coordinated the Voice of Peace, a magazine for the parishioners of OLP for decades and ran a Meal in a Minute program servicing homebound parishioners who were unable to cook for themselves.
Carol was the secretary and active member of the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce for over 24 years and then elected President in 2017. She believed in giving back to the community and she did in so many ways. Carol was a member of the Friends of the Library and founding member of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in Lynbrook. She coordinated new resident nights for the village.
For more than 25 years, Carol served on the Lynbrook Expo Committee and was the co-chair of the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Lynbrook, as well as chaired the 40th, 50th, and 75th, anniversaries for Our Lady of Peace Parish.
Living in the village and being a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace Parish afforded Carol the opportunity to serve a community and parish that is caring, nurturing and welcoming and she cherished every moment of her service to others.
Carol leaves behind her daughters, Melissa and Cherie, whom she was very proud of their chosen fields of education and nursing, fields of service as well.
