Florence A. Brooks of Lynbrook died suddenly on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 in her 89th year.
Loving and devoted wife of the late Walter C. Brooks, loving mother of Walter and Mary Clare, loving Grandmother to Michael, Kimberly, Timothy and James, loving Great-Grandmother to Allison and Sophia, and loving sister to Therese and the late Joseph Freiss.
Florence (Flo) was born on January 12, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, to Frank and Florence Freiss. Flo worked as a young woman at the Dime Savings bank, where she met her future husband. Walter and Flo married on May 13, 1956, and they moved to Lynbrook.
Flo was a true woman of faith, sharing her talents and energy in the Parish of Our Lady of Peace and all of Lynbrook. She found joy in participating in all aspects of the parish life, including working with the Bereavement Ministry, counting collections every Monday, joining with the Quilting Ministry for helping at-risk babies, offering rides to fellow parishioners when needed, and keeping her front door open to friends and clergy who enjoyed her unique hospitality.
Flo’s spirit was shared all throughout Lynbrook, where she found time to work on the Lynbrook Beautification Committee, Lynbrook Patriot Weekend Committee, and be elected as Lynbrook Doe Club President. The Lynbrook Fire Department was also a big part of her life, particularly Lynbrook Hose Company #1. Flo’s husband Walter is a past Chief of Department, and currently her grandson Michael is Second Deputy Chief. Flo was a long-time member of the Lynbrook Hose Company #1 Ladies Auxiliary and shared so much of her time and energy supporting the members.
Flo never sought the spotlight but was recognized for all her community service in 2009 as Lynbrook Woman of the Year, and again in 2014 receiving the Distinguished Service Award during the Lynbrook Community Awards Night. She also was presented a certificate from the Town of Hempstead honoring those achievements.
Every life that Flo touched embodied faith, warmth and love. We will miss her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly request a donation to the Our Lady of Peace Social Ministry, to continue the good works that were important to Flo.
