O’CONNOR, Gerard I. of Lynbrook NY, on May 12, 2022 at age 91, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Carol. Survived by his loving children Stephen O’Connor, Michael O’Connor (Renee), Kathleen Riveiro (Michael), and Karen O’Connor. Cherished grandfather to Kevin, Kathryn, Brendan. Predeceased by his siblings Margaret, Alice, and James.
Gerard was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., attended St Augustine Diocesan High School, and was an original member of the Brooklyn Cadets baseball team. He served in the US Air Force from 1951-1952 during the Korean War, and a year in the NY Air National Guard in 1953. He graduated from Fordham University in 1954 earning a B.S. degree in accounting. While working as an accountant in NBC Rockefeller Center NY he met his beautiful wife, Carol. They wed in 1962 and moved to Lynbrook, Long Island, to raise a family.
In 1966 Gerard earned a Master’s degree from NYU in Physical Education and enjoyed a successful career teaching students in Queens NY (Mater Christi and PS 73) and the Farmingdale school districts. He coached and umpired in several youth baseball leagues. During retirement he was a beloved bus driver for special needs children in the Rockville Centre school district. Gerard was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Lynbrook where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and Usher.
