Giovanni Iacuzzo

April 16, 1929 ~ September 11, 2023 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Giovanni Iacuzzo of Woodmere, NY passed away on Monday, September 11, 2023 at the age of 94. He died on his terms: at home, sitting at the kitchen table with a bowl of pasta in front of him and in the presence of his children. Born on April 16, 1929 in Cerda, Italy, Giovanni always sought to better himself and the lives of those around him. In 1960, he immigrated to the United States along with his sister Nina. His parents and other sisters immigrated in the mid to late 1950s. Giovanni returned to Cerda in 1966 to marry his beloved wife Genoveffa, née Prestianni. In New York, Giovanni began work in the restaurant industry, eventually becoming chef at a private Italian club in the West Village in Manhattan called Progressive Era Association. He also worked for a period of time at La Tavernetta in Woodmere. Giovanni retired at the age of 62, continuing to live life to the fullest, tending to his bountiful garden, cooking for anyone who visited, hanging out with friends in Florida, and always putting family front and center. Giovanni was a friend to all, enjoying conversation and never shying away from offering practical, sage advice. Two of his MANY sayings are “Chi ha tempo non aspetta tempo” (“He who has time does not wait for time”) and “Aiutati che Dio ti aiuta” (“Help yourself, God helps you”). Giovanni was deeply religious, praying every day and proud of the five Catholic masses he would watch every Sunday. Fiercely independent, he valued hard work, truth, reason, kindness, generosity, and human connections. Giovanni is survived by his children Josephine Diemond (Jed) and John (Karen Kahles); grandchildren Gabriella Diemond and Tiffany Olszower; sisters Nina Valenti, Maria Russo, Vickie Messina, and Lucy Iacuzzo; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Genoveffa (April 8, 2014), his father Pietro (June 26, 1957), mother Giuseppa, née DiGregorio (January 7, 2001), and sister Josephine Scifo (January 19, 2008). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
