A Life Well Lived, AIA John J. Lowery, Jr, passed away peacefully at his home on Long Island surrounded by family on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at seventy-eight. John was a loving husband, father, devoted grandfather, and brother.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Lowery; his three daughters, Mary Tasci (Can), Maureen Katz (Etienne) and Kathleen Kaplan (David); his beloved grandchildren Jonah Katz, Emma Katz, Ethan Kaplan, Norah Kaplan, and Kaya Tasci.
John was born to Ann and John Lowery on January 20, 1944, in Brooklyn, NY. He had fond memories racing soap box cars and playing stick ball with his brother Joe outside his Brooklyn home. In his teen years, the family relocated to Long Island. John later joined the Marines and went on to earn his degree in Architecture.
John was always on the move, a lifelong learner, avid reader, who loved to travel. He was intrigued by the beauty and culture of unfamiliar places. He had many and varied interests, with the ability to master anything he took on, but found his true passion in architecture.
John worked on some of the country’s most significant works of public architecture: The restoration of Carnegie Hall, the American Museum of Natural History’s Rose Center for Earth and Space located in New York City, Smith College Brown Fine Arts Center located in Northampton, Massachusetts. The Newseum in Washington DC, and the National Museum of Jewish History in Philadelphia.
All who knew John appreciated his irreverent sense of humor, his insightful and bright mind, his pride and unconditional love for his wife, family and especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
