Karen Aker Obituary

On the morning of September 27, 2023, Karen Aker left this life to begin her latest journey. She passed away peacefully in her sleep following a lengthy illness.

Born Karen Grenfell on October 12, 1947 in Michigan to Earl and Margaret, she moved around quite a bit through her childhood. Eventually settling in Massapequa, NY, the stage was finally set for her to meet the love of her life, Forrest (Skip) Aker.

After meeting in high school, the duo started dating and would never separate again. They married August 10, 1968, and moved to Panama for several years as Skip finished his service in the U.S. Navy.

Moving back to Long Island, Karen and Skip welcomed their first son, Steven, in July 1975. Their second child, Jonathan, arrived March 1980.

Karen spent her professional time working a number of jobs through her life. She worked for Grumman for a time, then pursued her passion of education by becoming a teacher’s aide in Malverne School District. She resigned this position in 1996 and was elected as trustee with the Malverne Board of Education, a position she held for 16 years. It was this time in her life that allowed her to touch the lives of so many. Even a heart attack in 1999 didn’t stop her from trying to make a difference for the betterment of all students in Malverne School District.

During her time as trustee, Karen also volunteered with the Lakeview Chapter of the NAACP. She served as the Education Chair emeritus and “advocated tirelessly for the rights and fair treatment of all students within the community.”

Karen touched so many lives and will be missed by all who knew her. She will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends. She is survived by her devoted husband (Skip), one sister (Denise), two sons (Steven and Jonathan), two loving daughters-in-law (Debby and Khalie), and four grandchildren (Aidan, Daphne, Keira, and Evaline).

In lieu of flowers, all those looking to contribute to Karen’s memory are encouraged to make a donation in her name to either of these organizations:

Alzheimer’s Association or the NAACP. Please see links below.
