Kathryn Hawkins Obituary

Kathryn Anne Hawkins
February 17, 1941 - January 8, 2024

Kathryn Hawkins, coach, counselor, and matriarch to Malverne’s Hawkins family passed away in the early hours of Monday, January 8, 2024. Kathy enjoyed Christmas at home with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Born Kathryn Anne Graham on February 17, 1941 to Helen Mary Graham, née Carns and Earl Winfield “Zev” Graham in the Bronx, Kathy grew up in Malverne, Long Island, the sixth of seven children. Graduating from Valley Stream Central High School in 1958, Kathy attended Brockport Teachers College for one year.

Kathy married Edward Hawkins on February 19, 1960 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Malverne – that November, they welcomed their first child, Anne who was eventually followed by eight other children – Thomas, Peter, Michael, Paul, Joseph, Marie, Andrew, and James. Fifteen grandchildren and, so far,  two great-grandchildren have followed in course.

Kathy worked as a coach at Memorial Junior High School in Valley Stream. She was a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor in private practice and she worked with children in afterschool programs at public schools in Malverne and Valley Stream.

Throughout her life, Kathy was known for her athleticism and grace – she moved with efficiency and purpose. In high school, she excelled at field hockey, basketball, and softball. As an adult, she would often compete in softball, volleyball, and bowling leagues.

A true Islander, Kathy adored the south shore beaches, and the beaches loved her back. An hour in the sun would turn her skin a glowing bronze. After teaching her children to body surf, she taught half the neighborhood kids by giving them piggy-back rides through the breakers. Kathy could ride a wave right up onto the beach well into her seventies.

But just as much of her character was revealed on the rides to and from the beach, because the place Kathy Hawkins looked most comfortable was behind the wheel of a car. Though she wasn’t one to lift the hood and tinker with the motor, unless absolutely necessary, she knew what she liked, and she liked muscle cars – not for show – for muscle. No matter the traffic or road conditions, no matter the chaos and cacophony in the car, Kathy Hawkins was a stone-cold operator with one hand on the wheel, and the other flicking ash off her cigarette. While she preferred a car that could keep up with her, she wasn’t fussy, driving a sub-compact cross-country with four children in the summer of 1984.

Kathy is preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Hawkins, her infant son, Joseph Hawkins, her two sisters, Eileen O’Donohue and Bernadette McTigue, and three brothers, James Carroll, Robert Graham, and John Graham.

Kathy is survived by eight of her children, Anne Hoey, Thomas (SueAnne) Hawkins, Peter Hawkins, Michael (Cynthia) Hawkins, Paul Hawkins, Marie Hawkins, Andrew (Kathleen) Hawkins, James (Cheryl) Hawkins, fifteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and her brother Edwin.
