Lynbrook, NY – Michael J. Wallace, 91, passed away peacefully at Beach Terrace Care Center, Long Beach, NY on November 20, 2019 following complications from a stroke.
Born on September 8, 1928 in New York City, Mike was predeceased by his wife Catherine (Kitty) Millar, wife Rosemary King, parents Margaret and Bruce, and brother Richard. Mike is survived by his loving relatives: son Michael (Christine) Wallace and granddaughters Brittany and Tiffany ; daughter Kathleen (John) O’Rourke and grandchildren Sean, Kaitlin and Thomas; stepson William King and granddaughters Allison and Danielle, and Lisa Quick and her children Ryan and William.
Growing up in NYC’s Midtown East neighborhood, he graduated from St. Agnes High School, was an altar boy and accomplished youth boxer, a spirit he retained throughout his life. Mike was very industrious and conscientious, selling newspapers and flowers to help out his single mom following his father’s death at an early age. An avid sports fan, his favorite teams included the Giants, Rangers, Mets after his boyhood baseball Giants departed, and Notre Dame football. Mike spent the majority of his career as a Vice President and loan officer at various bank branches in Forest Hills and New Hyde Park, including Franklin National Bank and National Westminster Bank.
A consummate gentleman, Mike always had a smile and friendly words for everyone he met. He loved gatherings, large or small, to share some laughs with family and friends. Mike was a loyal member of New York Elk’s Lodge #1 in Lynbrook, where his wonderful friends regarded him as family. A lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, he was also involved in many other clubs that served the local community such as the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs.
