Roberta Hafker Obituary

Roberta Hafker (Rota to her parents and husband) was born in Brooklyn, NY, on July 24, 1931, to Robert and Bertha Wild, immigrants from the Black Forest region of Germany. Her father was a Master Baker who had baking businesses in both Germany and the United States, and who established the popular and successful Wild’s German Style Bread brand which sold in the U.S. for over 80 years.  Just prior to the start of World War II, when Roberta was about four, she lived with her family in Germany for several years, but moved back home to the United States when the political climate in Germany grew dangerous. Roberta and her mother sailed back to the U.S. on one of the last ships that was allowed to leave Bremen before German borders and ports were restricted.

After several years in Ridgewood, her family moved to Bayside, where Roberta attended P.S. 162 and then Bayside High School where she graduated as valedictorian.  Her love of languages inspired her to major in French and minor in Spanish at Queens College where she graduated summa cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.  During these years she and her mother would help out at her father’s bakery and restaurant, Wild’s Bakery, in Hell’s Kitchen, N.Y., and later at Wild’s Baking factory in Newark, N.J..  Roberta and her family were active members of the German American community, and prepared relief packages with food and other essentials in their basement that they sent to struggling families in post-war Germany.

One wonderful evening in 1955, she joined her parents at a masquerade ball in Astoria, where dressed as a gypsy, she immediately captured the eye and heart of William H. Hafker who had decided to leave his friends early at the pool hall to attend that fortuitous ball.  A year later on May 26, 1956, they were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Flushing, then honeymooned in Germany and France. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary last year.

Roberta and Bill built their lives together around the shared belief that faith and family always come first. Roberta was wholly committed to making her family’s home a fortress of love and safety for her husband and sons to ensure their ability to excel in life.  Shortly after their first son was born, they bought a small bungalow in Miller Place on Long Island.  She loved gardening (and weeding!), the fresh air and open spaces, and taking her 3 boys to the beach, where you could find her swimming with them in the Sound in her bright white bathing cap.

For over 50 years, Redeemer Lutheran Church and School in Bayside was their church home.  There, Roberta was an active church member whose boundless compassion for others, her laughter, and her ever present smile made everyone feel welcomed and special.  Roberta served her church and her community in many roles including Cub Scout Den Mother, School Board Member, active PTA member, volunteer school secretary, and fittingly, as an angel every year for the church’s annual living nativity.

Roberta and Bill later attended Resurrection Lutheran in Garden City, and finally The Life Lutheran Church in Old Westbury.  Roberta entered her eternal rest peacefully on January 11, 2024, exactly 5 months after her beloved husband whom she called Will and her “Schatz” (treasure in German).

Roberta is survived by her sons Bill (William R.), Robert, and Eric; her daughters-in-law Ilene, Lisa, and Maria; her 6 grandchildren Billy (William K. (Amanda)), Heidi, Josh, Petra, Jake, and Max; and great grandchildren Hannah and Liam (William H.).

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to The Life Lutheran Church, and designated to the Hafker Memorial Fund (see link below).
