Sheila Keady, nee Bradley. Age 81. October 21, 1939 -- June 7, 2021.
Sheila was born and raised in the Bronx, the eldest of three daughters born to immigrants from County Derry and County Cork, Ireland. She attended Pius V elementary and high schools, and went to work in the secretarial pool at the FBI immediately after graduation. She was an active volunteer and officer with the Derry Society and the United Irish Counties Association. She worked a variety of secretarial and administrative jobs as a young adult, before marrying Jim Keady in 1968. Sheila and Jim bought a house in Malverne in 1971, where they raised their children and immersed themselves in community life. She became a dedicated amateur photographer alongside Jim, setting up a full-blown darkroom in the basement. Sheila served as a volunteer photographer for the Our Lady of Lourdes School & Parish, and saw a number of her photos published in the Malverne Times as well.
While maintaining her involvement with the Irish county societies, Sheila also organized 4-H clubs for children in the neighborhood, sewed numerous dresses and Halloween costumes, and shuttled her children to countless art, piano & Irish dancing lessons. Of special note are Sheila’s long-standing contributions to volunteering at Irish dance competitions, serving as entries secretary for three different feiseanna, and making calls and sending emails behind the scenes to help organize adjudicators and musicians.
Only illness in her final years slowed down her very active pace. When she was unable to continue living in her beloved house, she insisted on staying in Malverne, compelling her daughter Kathleen to find her a suitable ground-floor apartment in the village. Even as walking became more challenging, she was a faithful Mass-goer at Our Lady of Lourdes each weekend.
In early 2020, just before everything shut down, she finally relocated to assisted living in Darien, CT. The strict lockdown at the facility, necessary for the protection of the frail residents, was extremely challenging for her. She suffered a stroke in March of 2021, which dramatically hastened her decline. Her four children were fortunate to be able to keep vigil with her in her last days as she transferred to hospice care.
Sheila was predeceased by her husband, Jim, and her sisters Rosaleen Rowland and Kay Bradley. She is survived by her children Chris (Naomi), Margaret (Art), Joe (Eliza), and Kathleen (Tim), and eleven grandchildren, with a twelfth grandchild expected in September.
