William E. Gammel, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in his home in Pawleys Island, South Carolina on April 28, 2023 at the age of 87.
William was the only child of Alida and Otto Gammel. He was born and raised in Glendale, New York where he met his wife and the love of his life, Jeanette, in a local candy shop. They were married for 67 years and had five children: Debbie, Donna, Doreen, William and Joseph.
An entrepreneur and businessman, William owned and operated Eastern Aluminum Products Inc. in Astoria, New York. He installed windows and doors for customers across the five boroughs. He manufactured his own custom-made awnings as well. In his free time, William volunteered at his parish, Mary’s Nativity in Flushing, New York. He assisted in running bingo on Thursday evenings and was the swim coach for the Mary’s Nativity Girls Swim Team.
William loved the beach. He was an avid traveler, baker, and a diehard Mets and New York Rangers fan. A talented craftsman, he had a workshop in his garage where he used seashells that he collected on the beach to make jewelry holders, picture frames and decorative light switch plates. William is survived by his wife, four of their children, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren—with another on the way.
